Cyclic Effect Factoring in DOE (Design of Experiments)

Hello,

We are trying to perform an experiment that may or may not have an external cyclic influence.
For example our process is to optimise vision through a lens, the lens must be clean to start the experiment but depending on the application the user may or may not clean the lens during the experiment.

It the initial experiment we could clean the lens between each experiment and this would be acceptable. We could NOT clean the lens at all and validate if there was an external effect.

But after the initial setup experiment we may have a process where we need to clean every 3 or 4 observations so we would need to perform a number of repetitions to ensure we had included the effect but how many times do we repeat the experiment.

e.g. if we are performing an L8 and need to clean the lens every 3 observations what should be out total experimental stratergy?

How important is it to understand/quantify this effect? Anyone who wears glasses knows that you see better through clean lenses than through dirty lenses.

A precept of experimentation is that you never study what you already know. The only thing that seems to be unknown would be the quantitative relationship between the amount of "dirtiness" and the deterioration in vision. If this is unnecessary, I recommend cleaning the lenses between each experiment. Otherwise measure the amount of "dirtiness" and analyze it as a covariate.
