Long story short - On a daily basis I'm not sure where to begin !! Our history of internal audits and mgmt reviews is enough to keep the registar happy, but it isn't really much to show off. I also help out in quality/incoming inspection so there is constantly small fires to put out in production.
I guess I'm looking for help on where to get started on a day-to-basis, as I cannot get much help here at work. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, as mentioned I'm a newbie.

In my opinion, if you really want to be taken seriously as someone who can help the organization you are working for, forget the "ISO-me-this" and "audit-me-that". If you are really involved in the QMS, start investigating quality related issues that leaked into customer dissatisfaction and the "small fires" you have alluded to. Then, analyze/evaluate where are the weakness in the BUSINESS PROCESSES of this organization which allowed for these quality leaks. If you are able to effect process changes that minimize the chances of such quality leaks recurring, you are, by definition, improving the system.
The real ultimate indicator of a QMS effectiveness is it's ability to attain and maintain customers satisfied in a cost effective and profitable manner. If I were you, that's where I would spend my time.
Best of luck to you.
