Data Transfer from EIDE to SATA Drive - Help appreciated

Old Question:

I have set-up a wireless network for home, using a D-Link Wireless Router hooked to a cable modem. My roommate has a Toshiba Satellite Laptop (OS: Windows XP Pro) and I have a desktop (*OS: Windows XP Pro).

My problem is:

1. Router has been set with WEP security (I set that up). My desktop has no problems connecting to the Router. My roommate's Laptop states "can't find/verify identity." I had to use the Laptop to set-up the router.

I have tried to delete the connection and re-setup but the same issue. Originally when hooking up (setting security) the Laptop had wireless connection and the desktop didn't.

Any suggestions on how to connect the Laptop?

Re: Wireless Network Problems-Help appreciated

Coury,

I need a (complicated) password to connect via our office router. Once connected, I am OK. Does that apply to yours too?

Re: Wireless Network Problems-Help appreciated

I have had a similar problem when trying to connect an 'old' laptop to a security enabled network - not sure how old the Tosh is. I think it is down to the fact that the security level you have chosen is beyond the capability of the network adaptor on the laptop.

You could try disabling the WEP and try connecting to see if this is the problem.

If this is the case you can get around it by buying a USB network adaptor which can handle the extra security.

That was why I used a WEP Security Code. I don't think that is the issue. Because when I enter the password/network code, it still won't hook up even though it accepts the WEP Password.

I tried disabling the WEP, but that still didn't work. The strange thing is when I used the Laptop to set the router, it connected, but the desktop wouldn't.

I want to keep the WEP security, because when I had another Linksys Router I left the network key off, which the network was unsecured, and someone tapped into that router and put their own network key, so I had to replace the router.

Re: Wireless Network Problems - Help appreciated

Check that both computers are set to "obtain IP address automatically"

Control Panel -> Network & Internet -> Network & Sharing Center -> "View Status" -> Properties -> TCP/IPv4

You can enter the router's LAN IP address as the preferred DNS server (e.g. 192.168.1.1 but the last 2 digits may be different)

Check that the router has DHCP enabled. When I encounter a stubborn wireless computer I disable TCP/IPv6 in its control panel:
Control Panel -> Network & Internet -> Network & Sharing Center -> "View Status" -> Properties -> TCP/IPv6 (uncheck)

I will try that and let you know if it worked.

Re: Wireless Network Problems - Help appreciated

Fixed. I followed what you said, but made some different changes looking at the desktop's wireless setup and used the same information.

Thanks everyone.

New Question and doesn't involve the wireless connection:

I had to rebuild my computer (Desktop) with a new Motherboard, Processor, Hard Drive, and DVD/CD.

The old Motherboard was using EIDE connections. So, the Hard Drives (2 ea), and CD used that type of connections. The new Motherboard, uses SATA connections. That is why I had to purchase all new. I don't want to loose all of my old data on either Hard Drives. There is years of data on those drives.

Does anyone know if there is a way to retrieve the data from the EIDE Drives, so that I can save to the SATA Hard Drive. Is there a Conversion Ribbon to SATA connector? Or, can anyone suggest how to transfer that data?

Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend that you get an external USB hard drive enclosure that uses IDE (EIDE). That will allow you to access all your data as before and you can continue to use the drive for backup/redundancy/expansion as required.

You may need to adjust the jumper settings on the hard drive. See the instructions usually on the hard drive label to set the device to master or cable select.
