Deer hunting starts this Saturday in Texas (November 2016)

I'm off Friday. It's a 4 hour drive to my ranch in West Texas. I've seen some fairly nice deer on the game cameras, but only between midnight and 4:00 am. The rut should be good this year. I'm trying a decoy for the first time this year. Any other hunters here on the Cove?

Yep, the gun season has been in about a week here in GA, with the archery season being in about a month. There have been some nice ones taken, with several does already in the freezer. Although I didn't see any deer last weekend, it was still great to get out. There is something magical about watching the woods wake up at sunrise.

Yes, very magical. From 4:00 pm until dark is nice too. It's still hot here. I'm hoping for some 40's or low 50's in the next month or so.

Sorry not deer related,; but this weekend my 1.5 year old labrador retreived to hand both pheasants I shot, I was so pleased it made my day, even though that was the whole bag.

Going deer and wild boar shooting this Sunday, probably will not see anything, but it will be good to be out and escape for a day.

Exactly. Hunting for me has always been about the total experience -- the camaraderie, the preparation, the campfire, the scouting, watching the dog work, watching the woods come alive at dawn, building the tree stand, sighting in the gun, watching ALL of the wildlife (game and non-game species) as well as the kill. The TOTAL is so much greater than the sum of the parts. And as I get older the kill becomes of even less importance.

Because of lack of access I rarely get out any more :nope:, but when I do, I love it.
