There is no requirement for PPM measurements of your supplier. And as Roger noted it is a good measurement, as long as the criteria for the measurement is documented and relayed to the supplier.
By defining the criteria take into account the following:
- If you find 1 bad part in a 300 pc. batch of product, is the PPM 1 or 300.
- If a shipment is rejected because it has the wrong bar code label on 1 box of 20 shipped what would you define as the PPM?
I guess the main thing is to determine, document, and communicate the requirements to your suppliers.
Common supplier measurements:
PPM
Delivery
C/A response time
# of CAR's
Effectiveness of CAR responses (repeat CAR's)
Meeting continuous improvement goals
Meeting PPAP deadlines
Correct shipping/receiving information
etc...
Hope this helps,
