I was recently asked by a associate, I want to clean out my QA department and start fresh with new talent, etc the current department is not cutting the mustard. What would be you r ideals and suggestions. My suggestion was to evalute the department using SWOT.

Any ideals on this topic?

Thanks,

Re: Departmental house cleaning

Wow, the entire department suks? And your friend is the person in charge of this dept? He might want to look in a mirror first to see where he is going wrong that none of his employees are performing up to expectations. :2cents: It sounds like someone needs to sit down and make sure everyone knows what the expectations are, how the expectations will be met, and when people will be at the level they are expected to be.

If you get rid of an entire dept., there are a lot of hurdles to get over. Why not take a trained group and develop their potential instead of starting from scratch?

Also, I don't mean to sound totally negative, but from what you said there was very little evidence as to what the cause of the problem is so my first instinct is to figure it is management or lack of it. Tell your friend good luck.

Re: Departmental house cleaning

In every case of this type of statement I've ever seen the fault, as Steel says, is not the fault of the staff, it's the fault of the management giving unclear direction (if any at all)/

Maybe there's a bad egg or two, but a whole department?
Has this person considered the costs associated with that, never mind the human factors and morale. If the rest of the company sees that a culture of fear will instituted.

Is your associate serious or was this just idle conversation?

Flushing out the department and indicting new talent will not give you the desired result. On the contrary it may ruin whatever you have right now. This is not a sound strategy. SWOT is a very good tool if used properly with full understanding. If you start SWOT (or any tool) with some pre-concieved notins, then your 'bias' will not allow the right result to surface. Even the simplest of tools, like 'Why-Why' or '5 Why' analysis also miserably fail because of inadequacy of understanding the tool or the bias.

Hope this helps

I agree,

I also stated that he should sit down with each individual and outline goals and expectations as well. He is new to the organization and the department has been running without guidance.

I am afraid if he doesn't set things right management might clean him out :bonk:so ask him to hurry and act to set things right. He need to focus on system instead of humans as all cannot be bad

Re: Departmental Employee House Cleaning

Thanks for the input, but it seems after more discussion with him, that itseems it is a leadership problem (the department has not had a leader and lack of clear expectations). I suggested that he sit down with his director and set a clear path better known as "Objectives" for the department and then from there he should flow these down to his people with expected results and go from there. He even agress that you can't cut out twenty years of knowledge as it would be murder to the morale and customers would have a hard time understanding how come the people they've been dealing with are all gone.

Best regards,

Sounds more like a leadership (or lack thereof) than an employee problem. I found this more often true than not in the military, sorry commanders led to sorry units.

Re: Departmental Employee House Cleaning

You can manage a cow herd, but you have to lead people.

To lead one has to have among other things charisma and it doesn't take that to herd cows.

What we have are lots and lots of managers, but very few leaders
