Designing a Closed Loop Water System using Adiabatic Cooling Towers

Dear All,

I am not sure whether it is right forum to raise this query here.
Nevertheless I like to put it here and ask for support, if I can be directed to right place.

We are having evaporative cooling towers ( circulation flow 3100 m3/hr and 1900 m3/hr) which we are replacing with Adiabatic cooling towers.

The most obvious change is in the form of water flow being changed to closed circuit from open circuit.

There are many basic apprehension in mind like designing of pump head /NPSH available/expansion tank designing etc etc. Basically these query relates to designing of closed loop water system.

What should I do first?

Thanks and regrads.

Purchase the "Closed loop water cooling system design handbook"?...

Not sure about your area but these days, such work are considered 'specialist' work in my area and usually, the supplier of the system would be able to carry out the design, submit for approval (if needed) and carry out all the installation, testing and commissioning works - save the customers a lot of hassles.

Harry's approach is the one I see done most often these days, even from our on-site engineering department. There is no/little benefit to recreating the wheel, if there is a commercially available product for your purpose!

But, as an engineer, I guess I'd start by determining the temperature change I want and my delivery pressure...which would start a long line of calculations to determine the outlet pressure (since this is an adiabatic process), flow rates, etc.

Hi,

First thing you do is find out if there is some benefits in terms of cost savings , less monitoring , easy to use. If changing from free flow to closed circuit doesnt give you any form of cost saving. My suggestion is to stick to your current system.
Just my 2 cents of opinion
