"Destructive" Linearity Study Methodology

Is there a "destructive" Linearity study? How does the study being conducted and what type of instruments does this type of study applicable?

The methods of selecting specimens (i.e., split, consecutive, etc.) will work as well for linearity studies as for R&R studies if parts must be used. However, linearity studies should be performed using standards unless there is some reason that that is not feasible.

What type of measurement system are you trying to assess?

What type of measurement system are you trying to assess?
So, would it mean that if accurate standards are available, and Linearity study can be done with these standards, there is no need to do the destructive method using the actual parts?

I raised this question because I got confused with what I've learned from a friend when during one of their audit in TS16949, the auditor looks for a linearity study of their wirepull tester using the destructive method though they were able to show results using accurate standards similar to what they were using in calibration. The auditor reasoned out that the linearity study has to be done by simulating their testing process. Seems absurd to me. Correct me if I'm wrong but for me the best way to determine the linearity is to use a traceable, known standard to determine the bias of an instrument over the entire measuring range.

You are correct. Bias, Linearity and Stability studies are to be done with standards if at all possible. If standards are not available, a Master part may be used, but this is not the ideal situation. R&R studies must be performed using actual product.

I would challenge the auditor to show where in the MSA manual it states to use parts for Linearity studies. Reasoning it out just does not cut it.

I can tell you what was my case. The auditor was asking me for a pull tester MSA study. I used a simple machine capability study excel sheet , and the samples taken with the "Split sample " method ( 10 metters of wire devided on 50 pieces :notme:) , and the result was OK. Also the auditor put OK in the report.
