Need help with performing a gage R&R for a destructive test (tensile pull).
Any help, pointers, spreadsheets will be much appreciated.

The information on the prior posts did not help me as much as I thought they would. I do not have the AIAG MSA manual, I am in a different industry. Thanks for your suggestions.

First question.....how is your UTM calibrated? If under ASTM E 4 then the machine part is established at 1%.

I read through all the threads and it provided a lot of information but not a very basic procedure. So based on all my readings and discussions here is what I intend to do:

Take four consecutive samples from 5 consecutive lots.

Get 2 operators and use 2 samples from each lot and have the 2 operators conduct the destructive test.

Perform the Gage R&R.

The four consecutive samples gives the best chance of getting parts that can be assumed to be relatively close to identical.

The 5 consecutive lots gives the opportunity to evaluate between group (part to part) variation. In this case, variation between lots.

Using MINITAB - Stat>>Quality Tools>>Gage Study>>Gage R&R(crossed) function using the ANOVA method, this should provide us with data on GRR, EV, AV, PV, and DNC. From that we can determine if the measuring system is capable of controlling the testing process.

Also if I get unusual results from the total variation function, the plan is to look at the results with respect to tolerance to get a better look at the performance of the measurement system.

The criteria for determining if the measurement passes the Gage R&R is the lesser of %R&R to total variation and %R&R to tolerance.

Dear all,

I'm new in MSA study especially for destructive test.
According to summary discussion from HRinAZ, where the statement of "Take four consecutive samples from 5 consecutive lots." come from?
Why 5 consecutive lots instead of 3 or 6 consecutive lots?

Its new to me also. We are checking pull strength for terminals. Till now, we have said as it is destructive we cannot conduct MSA. Is that applicable to this also????????

I dont have minitab to do as HR said. Can anybody help me out?

I am not an expert on R&R study but I think there is some important new data which might help with the validation of tensile testing equipment in the future.

For tensile testing machines there are three or four variable factors:

1) Measuring sensors (load cell, Extensometer, and transverse strain extensometer - if you are calculating r values). All of these devices can be calibrated (or verified) to International Standards by your testing machine supplier.

2) Software. Up to now there was no way to check if the software uses the correct algorithms when measuring offset yield, UTS, r value, etc. so it was necessary to use standardised sample / specimens.

The EU is introducing TENSTAND standard data sets which can be imported into the testing software. The software then calculates the results using the internal algorithms, and the results checked for accuracy and consistency. Most reputable testing machine manufacturers will already be aware and have the possibility to support this concept.
