Destructive Testing with respect to PPAP submissions

Hello Everyone and Marry Christmas!!

Can anyone tell me how one would deal with distructive testing with respect to PPAP submissions? I know that most PPAP require 300 part sampling for production runs. We don't want to destroy 300 parts.

Mike,
The 300 parts are usually for the customer's evaluation, not for testing. Check with your SQE to see what they want tested. When we do destructive torque/tension testing, we normally do 10 parts. Of course if the customer says test 300 and he is paying for it, then 300 it is.

To adequatly determine if we have meet the customer requirements (the parts are correct) we have to cut them to test them.

section 1.2.1 Significant Production Run, states that a run of 300 parts is required.

Is this for statistical studies at our facility or for submission to the customer?

We are preparing a PPAP for a customer and the part has to have a certain case depth hardness. To follow 1.2.1 w would have to cut 300 parts.

The truck industry allows as small a sample as 30 pieces.

I may be confusing issues.

I think you will find that the samples you do your testing on have to come from a production run of at least 300 parts. I am 99.9% sure you don't have to cut 300 parts.

1.2.1 of PPAP gives the minimum size run to take whatever PPAP samples you need. If your customer requires a 100 part sample then they have to come from a production run of at least 300 consecutive parts. Destructive testing is determined by the spec you are working to - sometimes the customer's own, sometimes an OEM or even ASTM, ISO etc. The required number of parts to test will be stated in the test method or by agreement with the customer.
Contact your customer if you are unsure but I urge you not to cut 300 parts until you confirm that's what he wants. The PPAP manual 1.2.1 DOES NOT require 300 samples. It requires you to run a significant enough number to be sure your process is running normally - in this case 300 parts minimum. They don't want you to run 5 parts just because your customer only asked for 5 samples.
