Determining Gauge R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) Interval

Gauge R & R and interval

We have not long started R & R studies and I have a couple of questions. Firstly, once an R & R study has been done, does it have to be done again on the same piece of equipment? If so, what interval would be recommended. Secondly, we have a fair number of drop gauges scattered about the plant. An R & R study has been done on one gauge, but as the gauges are identical, do I have to conduct studies on all the other gauges? Needless to say, all gauges are calibrated at regular intervals.

Your advice is greatly appreciated

David,

The following couple of threads should help:

Yes, R&R has to be conducted periodically. There is no thumb rule for setting R&R interval. Historical data and engineering knowledge must be used when deciding the interval. What are the factors that affect the measurement systems? How often do these occur? What is the duty cycle of the measurement system etc.

I think it is possible to conduct a representative R&R study for a 'family' of gages if the tolerances being measured and other measurement conditions are similar. I suggest you do a forum search on this and I'm sure you will find this issue discussed a few times in the past.
