Re: Man days of internal audit

As many as it takes for the audit to be effective.

No 2 organizations are the same and no 2 management systems are the same either.

Although realistically speaking, one also has to be aware of Parkinsons' Law of course.

Amanabhai, are you seriously expecting answers to a question as broad as this??? If so, good luck.

For certification audits there is a documented guideline to decide the no. of audit days. But for internal audits there are no such guidelines.

It all starts here. From ISO 9001:2008, Clause 8.2.2:
An audit program shall be planned, taking into consideration the status and importance of the processes and areas to be audited, as well as the results of previous audits.
With the audit program details in hand, you determine the necessary resources and time required. For internal audits, there is no "magic" generic formula to determine "man-days." This varies greatly from company to company.

You would have to provide more information, such as type of business, processes and number of employees, for someone to venture a guess.

V.J.Brahmaiah is correct: For internal audits there are no guidelines.

Even for third party audits where there is a number of man-days specified for registrar audits, it is linked to the number of people in the company. I have never felt linking man days (or man hours) to the number of people in a company was (is) always appropriate, but I can not say I can think of anything else to link 'required number of audit man days' to other than the number of company employees.

If the number of people in a company is the basis for the number of audit man days, what about comparing scenarios like a large number of company employees but majority of the employees are the same position vs small number of employees but a lot positions?

Re: Internal Audit Man-Days

I believe that accreditation body guidelines permit CB's to amend the number of days allocated depending on the complexity of the work and also things like 'parallel working' e.g. a lot of people all doing the same work.

That is one reason why there are people who believe that defining a certain number of mandays based upon the number of people in a company is not appropriate. There are many variables that can affect the length of both internal audits and third party audits which is why it is difficult for someone to define how many man days or man hours an audit should take.
