Howdy,

I am looking for a "30,000 ft. overview" - how to develop a QA program for mfg. & assy. of widgets (new for company) for compliance to ISO 9001.

I Have a block in thought process....Where do I start? a. b. c. d. etc... Is there an APQP template available or do I just make one big turtle??? :confused:

The "Big Turtle" would be way too heavy! :D

Marc is correct. You should develop a flow diagram of the entire process that takes you from the initial customer contact all the way to shipping the product, invoicing and obtaining customer feedback. Some companies develop a Process Map to show how all major processes interact. There are examples in the "Post Attachments List." Click on the little green bar in the upper-left side of the page.

There also many examples of flow diagrams, flow charts, etc. here.

I did a quick search in the "Post Attachments List" on "Process Map" and this is what I found.

Give it a try. And....please come back. :agree1:

This is a drill down (did I just create the next week's version of TQM?) process.....

Start with blocks.....
stuff in.....things done to stuff.....stuff goes away.....

Now, drill down from the block of things done to stuff.....

Define.....as Marc correctly says, the flow diagram.....then further down if necessary to functional level.....

Next.....identify SUPPORTING processes.....purchasing, calibration, etc.....

For purchasing, identify critical and non-critical items and control them, use Corporate purchasing.....

For calibration, find a lab accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 by and ILAC signatory body and outsource the calibration.....and remember, calibration don PROPERLY is not cheap..... http://www.ilac.org is where you find the signatory bodies..... (U.S.: IAS, A2LA, NVLAP, L-A-B, ACLASS).....

Back to the flow.....

Now that supporting processes are dealt with.....identify procedures, training needs, qualified people, etc., for each of the smaller blocks.....

Now you can identify likely choke points and issues.....

That now will give you a good idea of th kinds of things that need to be done and what resources (e.g., people) you will need.....and maybe just as important.....you can develop short/medium/long term action plans.......

The rest of you filled in what I felt to be correct.
Flow diagrams and process maps!

While you're diagramming the processes, why not do an inventory of all existing documentation and find places in the maps/flows where they fit in there....

Agree with Mark Paul, track the "gazinta's" and the "goesouta's", then drill down for the details. Do the Macro, it's amazing what processes that get missed or identified incorrectly. The old "can't see the forest for the trees".
