DFMEA (Design FMEA) at Vehicle Level - Some inputs needed.

We do perform DFMEA at Vehicle level and have the practice of mentioning the potential causes(for some failure modes) at system/sub-system level, like improper design of Air Intake system, etc. For the corresponding controls, we mention like 'refer Air Intake System DFMEA'. Is this a right practice? If so, how do we provide detection ratings for 'Refer FMEA' types.
I am the DFMEA facilitator in the current Organization(unfortunately so :D), even though the tool is not my cup of tea. But having taken up the role, I had quite a learning and have the appetite to learn more.

There's nothing wrong with referring to component DFMEAs from the top level, but what you should be primarily concerned with are (a) interactions of components that might result in failure (which could cause you to revisit component DFMEAs), (b) potential operator issues and (c) serviceability issues. You might also address potential shipping issues--features of the design that might promote or inhibit safe transit.

In that case Jim, detection rating doesn't make sense, is n't it? It only helps in identifying component level DFMEAs which completes the risk assessment.

If you look at the 4th Edition FMEA manual, on page 49, you'll see a list of example detection controls. It includes such things as design reviews, testing, simulations, etc. that are intended to reveal design defects before the product goes into production. Those types of controls are appropriate at the top level as verification of the controls cited in component DFMEAs. Sometimes additional testing at the top level is necessary (or prudent) and sometimes not.

When you're developing your RPNs at the top level, the individual factors (Severity-Occurrence-Detection) should reflect the uncertainty of the component RPNs. In other words, any additional testing of components in the assembly should be guided by one's confidence in the DFMEA output at the component level.
