DFMEA - Real Life Drama

wow so many opportunities, Lessons Learned...like DFMEA, like PPAP, etc etc only work when properly executed and implemented (and not overriden by management). Remove the FORD logo and insert any of many firms whose recent corporate transgressions has seen the light of day. The urge and "rush to launch", to be first to market usually backfires. What good is making a launch date, if recalls and major product issues materialize. Launch on time, but launch clean!

The best simulation and modeling get you in the ball park...but there is no real substitute for rubber on the road testing....

We bought our first Ford a couple of years ago (Edge). It had all the features we wanted and was built locally by a few of my neighbours. When things worked, we loved it. However we started having issues and when we looked them up, we discovered that many of the faults were common. The primary concern was that Ford denied the issue existed (a class action lawsuit was launched in the US, but not in Canada). My wife summed it up succinctly, "I can't trust the vehicle and I can't trust the dealership to give us a straight answer". We traded it in for a Toyota.

Ford still zero...my first and last was a Taurus SHO back in 1989. Recall for the clutch, but dealer did not have the new design part so put in another of the original design (and charged me $650 for it). By the time they got the new design clutch, the recall window had closed, so I had to pay for the new one too. Motor mounts...same recall, same story...then the whole fan housing disintegrated at 96K miles.

Been driving Honda and Acura ever since and have no complaints at all.
Put 265K miles on the Acura TL before trading it in, 225K on a Honda Civic...now own a Honda Civic and a Honda Pilot...love them both.

Back in the 80s, I was in a room waiting to present an 8D to the plant manager and staff at the Ford Lorain, OH assembly plant. They were wrapping up a discussion on design problems with the turbo charger of the new MN12. The design issue guaranteed that all turbo chargers would fail within a relatively short time frame, but the fix would delay the launch of the vehicle. The plant manager said that he didn't care, that they could replace those under warranty because nothing was going to delay this launch.

The plant manager said that he didn't care, that they could replace those under warranty because nothing was going to delay this launch.
That's a perfect example of moronic management. Because he can quantify the costs of replacing the parts under warranty, he thinks that he's doing a risk assessment and making an educated decision. What is impossible to quantify is the loss of goodwill by consumers; the damage to the brand reputation. Impossible to quantify in monetary terms, as some of the comments in this thread exemplify

I have been really trying to read the article but the website redirects me to the European site, where all other links are working but not this one. Conspiracy?

Guess I´ll have to VPN the s***out of this...
It seems the EU regs have frightened off Detroit Free Press.
