Difference a gage can detect - Similar Parts

Oftentimes, after we have established a gage and completed a Gage R&R, a similar (but not the same part) is introduced either on the floor or on the machine. The question then becomes, is the Gage able to distinguish between the two. We would like to answer this question often before there are parts available. Is there a way to use Gage R&R results to do this?

What sort of gage? What kind of features/characteristics does it check?

Re: Difference a gage can detect

Are the sizes of the parts that are measured close? Is the tol. of the said parts close? What is the NDC of the gage?

Re: Difference a gage can detect

It can vary what it is measuring. For the sake of discussion let's say it is length. The tolerances are usually close .7 mm is a good example. The NDC of the gage varies but it usually isn't far over the required 10.

Re: Difference a gage can detect

Call up the SQE and discuss it, I think they will accept it as good, the gage is proven for that range.

I don't understand your last reply...it isn't a different part we are getting in by mistake, it is a "new design" that is entering production that we need to be able to distinguish...

It's not real clear what you want the gage to do. You have different-but-similar parts, and you want the gage to be able to tell the difference between part A and part B? Is this some sort of automated system? Is there potential for the parts to be mixed up, and you want the gage to "sort" them? Or do you just want to be able to use the same gage for both parts?

Re: Difference a gage can detect

I'm having trouble following exactly what you are asking. Are you asking if you can use the same GRR for a group of similar parts instead of doing MSA studies on each?

Re: Difference a gage can detect

There are two close but different parts by design. The parts will be run on the same machine, we need to know whether the gage can catch the difference if they should happen to get mixed.
