Difference between Range method and ANOVA method of MSA

I want to know whether GR&R studies had to be conducted on all gauges used in the shop floor or only for a family of gauges. (Like 0-25mm Mics, 0-150mm Verniers etc..) ie.. one instrument from that family. I think that it make sense to conduct GR&R for one instrument from one family because what we are trying to conclude is whether that instrument is suitable for measuring a product cha:)racteristic.
What is the difference between the average range method and the AIAG method of analysis?

Re: Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) on all shop floor gages?

AIAG presents two alternative methods in the MSA manual.

One of the methods is the Range Method. This method originated when the availability of computers was restricted and many calculations had to be performed by hand. It has the advantage of being simple.

The second method is the ANOVA method. This method provides an additional test for the possibility of an interaction between the operators and the parts. With computers readily available, and the ability to perform ANOVA calculations in Excel, there is no real reason to use the Range method.

If no interaction exists, the two methods will provide similar, but not identical results. If an interaction does exist, only the ANOVA will be correct.

Hello,

:notme:I'm sorry to ask it:

WHY the ANOVA is The correct method when an interaction exist between operator and parts (or gauge, I don't know) ?

The Average Range method done Repetability and Reproductibilty; they're linked by calculations but we can make the difference between the two !

The Range method can distinguish the two main effects (Operator and Parts) from the random variation (Repeatability), but cannot statistically separate out the operator*part interaction. A significant interaction would be pooled with the Repeatability. The total R&R would be correct, but the breakdown of contributing factors would not be correct.

The ANOVA method can separate this variation and properly allocate it to the contributing factors.
