Disposal of Plastic used in Medical Parts (Scrap)

We are a plastic injection molding company and a 13485 registered contract manufacturer. We mold compoments, perform secondary ops and also do some assembly.

Is there any regulation, procedure, standard that governs how we dispose of our Scrap. It is NOT bio hazard of any sort. It will be plastic and sometimes will have metal inserts.

I have searched everywhere and can find nothing that says we need to treat this any different than how we would for a non-medical part. Our managers/engineers are questioning whether we need to have a specific procedure and I am thinking no.

Thanks,

Pat McGhie

Why would you want to scrap it - you could grind and sell the pallets to some other suppliers !

Re: Disposal of plastic used in medical parts

no - if it hasn't been used it's just scrap plastic unless there is some additive that would make it unuseable for recycling.

You're customers might want you to make sure it's destroyed by grinding or something and can't be used in product, though.
I currently make labels and other printed material and we have to prove that scrap labels have been send for destruction (like incinerating) and that pape for outserts is going to be re-pulped for recycling in a controlled chain.

I worked in plastic moulding for drug and device and we recycled the material for use in products that did not reuqire 100% virgin raw materials.

Thanks for the reply.. In most cases, it will just be a few parts and not likely worth regrinding, hence scrap. (If the quantity was large and we had a use for the raw material we would regrind)

The other aspect, if there are inserts molded in, we also would tend to just scrap.

Thanks Scott,
Typically there are no "additives" in the normal sense but we may have inserts, threaded, wire, blades molded into the plastic.

Logically we would want to render anything scrapped as non-dangerous or non usable but figured we would cover that as part of our assembly documentation for that specific product. If the custiomer, as you mentioned had a requirement, that would aslo be covered in the product documentation.

We deal with labels too... and those have to be 100% accounted for!!
