how do you dispose of old hard drives?

I read something about the best way of really preventing anyone from accessing "erased" data is to drill a couple of holes through the housing and platters.

I've got a stack of old HD's at home just waiting to be disposed of.

I wouldn't destroy them. They are very useful as external drives for carrying to presentations and classes. I format the drive which cleans the drive then record over them. The external USB hard drive case is only a few dollars and the combination makes an excellent, lightweight presentation package.

I would be very happy to receive any you want to get rid of and will guarantee you will never have to worry about the data on them.

These are really old. Not even worth the shipping cost. Some are bad - but a dedicated hacker could still access information.
I've already put the decent ones back into my and my son's PCs.

That is not entirely correct, I'm afraid: It is still possible to retrieve data from the disk surfaces that escaped the drill. It is not exactly easy, but it can be done.

Exactly. A format is not enough, but if you first format them and then write rubbish all over them you will be ok.

12 pound sledgehammer and a six pack of Bud...
Same as above: Format and owerwrite first... Then you can amuse yourself with the sledghammer.

I believe that there are free disk wiping tools to be found on the internet. Wipe them 8-10 times, and you should be reasonably safe. :mg:

If the drives can be installed in a computer, you can use a freeware utility such as Free Disk Wipe. Doing a thorough wipe on a large drive can take a long time, though. If you don't want to bother with it, get out the drill.

Darik's Boot and Nuke which you can download at sourceforge.net is an excellent disk wiping utility. Just search on DBAN.
