Do desktop calendars need to be calibrated?

Why would a calendar from the wrong year be on a desk? If the process is THAT important that someone thinks the calendar should be 'calibrated', I can't imagine they'd still have one from last year.

If it is important, just verify against someone elses calendar every day and have them initial each date verified on the paper calendar.

The calendar represents time just like a clock does excepte larger increments and many folks calibrate their clocks.

I think I may know what the OP is asking. If so, not a bad question...

The same logic (if it's the same) would apply to a tape measure. How do you know the length on the tape measure is acccurate? Just because it displays an inch, how do you know it's an inch? It might be 1.2 inches.:)

So akin to that, how do we know that the days and dates printed on a calendar are correct?

My response would still be there is no needed verification. However, if it is important to a process, then randomly pick months and days in the months, and verify against another standard.

I would think the western calender is a generally accepted standard.:)

Not necessarily. A calendar does not measure or assess time, or the passing of time. It merely represents numbers and word designations of blocks of time. If today is Tuesday, one week from now will always be a Tuesday. Always.

A clock is a different matter. One can assess that a clock is accurate to World Time. A clock accumulates a maximum amount of error over an hour, a day, etc. That error may affect a timed process.

It's not hard to calibrate them, set them on an annual schedule and write the procedure as verification directly to NIST via www.time.gov or call the NIST time phone number(303-499-7111).

This phrase, from ISO 9001:2008 element 7.6 just before the a-f portion, should be memorized by all that work in an ISO 9001:2008 environment.

"Where necessary to ensure valid results . . . "

Figure out if a calibrated calendar is necessary for valid results and you should have your answer.

I'm having trouble imagining a circumstance for which it would be necessary, but I'll keep an open mind if the OP can explain the need.

You also need to address if a calendar is monitoring and measuring equipment.

I'm all ears.

Do desktop calendars need to be calibrated? I was asked this question but did not have an answer. Any takers???:
:eek::confused:
(1)Is the calendar used in anyway that would affect the quality of the product? (2)Is the calendar used to record the date on required records? (3)Is traceability a requirement? (4)Is the calendar electronic?

If the answer to the above four questions is NO, then calibration would not be required. If the answer to all four questions is YES, then the calendar should be calibrated. If the answer to questions (2), (3) and (4) is YES, then the calendar should be calibrated.

If the answer to questions (2 ) and (4) is yes, refer to section 8.2.4 of the ISO 9001-2008 standard. An argument could be made either was as to whether a date is required on records. Good practice would be to record the date in which case the calendar should be calibrated.

I hope this helps.

Brad, you may be the genius I have been looking for. Is there in existence, a common sense standard that is applicable to cases like the calendar and the wall clock?
Is it in fact true, even though I look at the calendar to ensure I have the correct date to put on my report, common sense, ease of verification, and the low probability of error, are collectively sufficient to allow me to forego a formal calibration on the trusty old almanac.
What is this convention called and can it be used instead of the previous standard which also remains unnamed however it gets applied everywhere and anywhere confusion surfaces regarding the necessity to cal or don’t cal. I vaguely recall it being something like; if it affects quality or you don’t know enough about it to explain it to an auditor then obviously it requires calibration.
As you can plainly see, I need help…

What we don't know at this point is why you asked specifically about calendars (frankly, a silly question) in the first place. What do you want to know? ISO 9001:2008 says that calibration must be done when calibration is needed to ensure valid results. What this means is that if a measuring device is used in situations where calibration would provide greater assurance of valid results and a relatively high level of confidence is necessary or prudent, the thing should be calibrated. If, on the other hand, calibration won't add anything useful, it's not required. In the latter case, it should be a simple matter to explain the rationale.

following Jim's lead: it would be helpful if you (the OP) could provide context for your question. The standard itself gives you the common sense answer you are looking for. In oder to help you frame a logical answer we really need to know the context of the original question.
