Sorry, I don't follow. My previous post was just to remind people that The Cove does not support the illicit exchange of documents protected by copyright. Your offer to send the OP a copy of a standard was not clear about the potential copyright violation.

The Cove (as in Marc and the moderators) take this issue very seriously.

You weren't reminding people; you were specifically addressing me!

Sorry - My organization also would not break the law! It was a genuine offer - now withdrawn - as am some what offended by your implied intent.

And also sorry you just cant see the madness?

Sidney recognizes that anything posted in a public forum is read by not just the participants, but anyone else who happens to stop by.

If you post an offer to send a "free copy" of a copyrighted document, what were we supposed to think? Frankly, I'm a little confused at what you're offended by.

:topic: I'm not speaking for Sidney, but I'm sure that no offense was intended, and I'm not sure that any was even implied. Being a relative newcomer to the Cove, you might not be aware that a conscientious effort is made to prevent illicit file sharing here. Because what you were offering wasn't clear, I'm sure that Sidney meant it as a "just in case" bit of advice.

Respectfully you have missed the point - but I respect your position in the forum :truce:and will be more precise with my words in future.

PS. just for the record we often have many "purchased" copies in stock which are left over from public training sessions and that is what I was offering. We can't sell them because of our agreement with our Standards Provider, but we can - quite legally - give them away.:agree:

The moderators (Sidney is one) have a responsibility to assure that there are no copyright materials being channeled in any way here.

I have a thread in controversial forum that you are welcome to comment on the copyright laws. But that does not change the fact that it is illegal for us to allow standards protected by copyright, and for now, we cannot deviate from that.:)

In the future, I suggest that any poster who has an issue with any post, please use the report button, and we will give it its due attention.:agree1:

Richard, I am sorry that my post follows yours. I was typing when you posted.

As long as it is not a standard, and you have permission, we would be very grateful for helpful documents. Feel free to contact Marc or a moderator about any such document.

:topic: I have a question - Should it be considered as a violation of the copyright laws if any of the standards is copied verbatim in the Quality Manual or written in hand in one's personal notes given that the standard was borrowed from a public library?

Hand written notes are always accepted as OK.

If you photostat or scan into your manual, that could be considered breach of copyright (if they decide to pursue).

If you re-type excerpts - and have a copy of the original - then I know of know history where the owner has pursued. If you don't have a copy then that can give problems.

In some of our software - we quote the entire text of a Std, however we also provide a licensed copy of the original Std with that software. So - far we have not had a problem with this.

If you re-type the whole Std - I suggest it would be cheaper to simply purchase.

The above information and advice is given "without prejudice" so dont blame me if you get prosecuted:cool:

Hi,

If a medical company claims compliance to a standard, does it need to buy the standard? Or is it sufficient to have access to the standard (such as having the standard available for consultation in a college library)?

Thanks.
Looks like this thread has moved :topic:from the OP's question.
