Do You Chase Your PSW signed warrants?

So PPAP has become a standard practice these days. So every time someone breaths, we need to do an updated PPAP. However, customers are really bad at returning a signed warrant. So do you chase them down for a signature? Or just file it and wait.

Note: This question refers to subsequent PPAPs where the part has been running for years, not necessarily PPAPs required for initial part approval.

We're really bad and only chase when we need it. Just been asked for an old one by the same company but different site. Large company so why can't they access it internally? We've done a PPAP based on switching to this new site so they really shouldn't need it. Instead I've had to chase. They're not really interested in helping us so it'll be a chase for sure. Plus they're on extended shutdown so there's going to be a long wait for a reply.

Don't really have a choice, unless you are fishing for an audit finding. Yes, customers are lax in signing off and returning PPAP warrants. However, if you contact the buyer, and inform that unless you receive the signed warrant, you are unable to produce and ship what they ordered, you will be surprised at how quickly you get some action.

When that works it's funny to see contact's priorities change.

We're a small company dealing with larger multinational companies. We're low down on their priorities but stopping the BMW line is a serious motivator. However it could be a motivator to look for another supplier. So far we've never had a NC for it but we're only certified to 9001. I don't think it's ever been picked up in the past.

FWIW, not having the signed warrant back is a potential risk direct with the customer (outside of any audit).
Are they just "not getting around to signing it", or are they holding leverage to use it against you in the future?

How can you ship material without having the signed warrant? Ron's approach works quickly and easily...but I would throw that out to engineering, launch team or quality...not to the buyer. Annoying buyers is high risk, letting SQE know they might get blamed for delay is much lower risk.

I usually send a Deviation to the Program manager asking for authorization to ship parts without a signed PSW. That usually gets a response, especially if the customer needs parts immediate

We used a memo in the PPAP package saying if we don't receive an approved or rejected PSW in 30 days, we will assume it's accepted.

One of our customers would change the status in their portal and we used a screen shot of that as approval. FCA, I think.

Like I said, these PSWs are for parts that are already in PAPP approved production, in some cases for years. The new PSW don't really affect a thing -- just paperwork.

Without a doubt...Customers have a repsonsibility to their part and in a timely manner...of course tactful diplomacy is always welcomed...

I would also double check the Customer Specific Requirements to see if Annual PPAPs need a customer signature or not. Some of our automotive customers just required us to have an Annual PPAP on hand in case they need it, but not sent to them or signed.

I can't think of any other PPAPs that would not be a design change, requiring customer approval.
