Do you use software and/or database for FMEAs rather than Excel?

Thanks for this suggestion, Miner. How much does the software cost?

The flash video makes it look like the software facilitates the FMEA process. Does it make FMEAs easy for the non-QA person to use--people like young process engineers?
It has been about 3 1/2 years since we purchased it, and I can't recall how much it was.

The software is very easy to use. You can build libraries of common failure modes and control methods that save time. You can also build the process flow separately or as-you-go in the PFMEA. You can summarize your recommended actions as a separate action plan. Dyadem will also do some customization for you as part of the support package.

I have found that it makes the logistical part of the FMEA very easy so you can focus on the FMEA itself.

Although I haven't seen Rich around here for a while, I have used the software his company markets called QPLUS (Harpco systems). It is, far and away, the best software I have come across. The biggest problem with Excel is there is too much potential for the basic 3 documents (PFD, PFMEA, and CP) to not be properly aligned - along with a ton of "copy and paste". The software I mentioned makes it near impossible for this to happen - and there is no "copy and paste". The FMEA module "forces" you to follow a methodology that makes sense and it virtually writes the Control Plan for you. If interested I can get you his phone number (I believe their website is still under construction).

I have no connection with HarpCo other than being a user of their software.

Hi people,

I´m new in this forum and I want to say first I had read your comments and find it´s a great community that really works.

I´m from Uruguay and work in automotive industry. Here, there are not so much people well skilled to share, so I thought in search a virtual community to interchange.
I´m happy to had made the desition to join you.

Regarding this topic I am wondering if someone work with FMEA, Control Plan & Action Plans linked in excel

If someone have experience I´d like to hear and learn how to..
Thank you in advances!!

Hi Moni

I'm about to start on a project to develop a linked Flow/FMEA/CP in Excel.

I intend to use a "master" workbook to contain a superset of all possible requirements.

I hope to use "paste linK" to create part specific documents from the master. The link will be broken for true part specific features.

My hope is that any change to the master will cascade to all linked spreadsheets to make updating easier.

Not sure how this will work for Flow/FMEA just yet.

I'll let you know how it goes.

As a software house we have 3 different types of FMEA package including an Access based version, dBase 5 datbase files and one that looks like a fancy spreadsheet! I would say that database software allows you to share knowledge between unit processes or unit functions giving engineers better opportunities to work as a team. The units can then be built up to a full FMEA for a particular part. By using library text commonly understood nomenclature is adhered to. If you purchase software the accuracy of calculations is the responsibility of the software house. If you use Excel spreadsheets, I recommend that a master spreadsheet is always the starting point. I have come across problems where incorrect calculations have been copied from one FMEA to another.

I have used a couple different software types for FMEA's. Excel, the old Ford FMEA software, the Harpco system and APIS's IQ-FMEA. The last two have good tools that help develop the FMEA (ie. help with the thinking bit).

The IQ-FMEA works at filling out the FMEA form by way of Fault Tree Analysis, which, because of it's visual representation of components, charateristics, functions, potential failure modes, controls, etc... engineers respond to it better than filling out a list. take a look at www.apis.de to see what I mean.

Are there any other tools that 'trick' people into developing a FMEA? That's the key. It is not just about copy and pasting or creating one standard FMEA, it still needs to be reviewed a couple times a year as well...

Jen, When using our software, engineers should look at dividing the process into simple stages and set up a process plan, then create a full FMEA by combining the FMEAs for each stage. It is possible to by-pass this method a write a unique FMEA for the part. Effective use of any software for good teamwork and shared knowledge may require a System Administrator to set policies for use. e.g. Permissions can be set to limit acccess to parts of the software. Database programs become essential when you have large numbers of FMEA documents so that searching, sorting and filters speed up finding the correct FMEA. In our software, we include review date filters to encourage documents to be updated.
I come across too many engineers who do not work together because they think they are they only ones who can write a good FMEA when by working within the database program they can train less experienced people.
For specific answers on our products please see my details and contact me directly. Regards Celia

I have used and recommend FMEA-Pro software by Dyadem. It has the capability for integrated FMEA and Control Plans if you set them up in advance. Or you can do the FMEA separately. I had previously used early versions of Omnex, Powerway and a third that I can no longer remember. FMEA-Pro wins hands-down. It is intuitive and flexible.
Thanks for the recommendation. If there is anyone looking for information about this product, PM me. I'd be happy to help you personally.
