Document Numbering Systems Question

Hi all,

Quick question hopefully I will get a very helpful answer.

I'm in the process of migrating our QM to AS9100 Rev C from Rev B, in our procedures we have a procedure "Shipping" 7.5.6. From what I can see there is no such procedure in ISO or AS9100. I am lead to assume that this procedure was written and numbered by someone in my organization, before I was here.

My question is : Can a company create a Procedure and number it, if it is non existent in the actual Standards - ISO 9001:2008 or AS9100 Rev C ?

In my novice opinion the answer should be no because there would be no need to set standards if anyone could create some as they please.

Re: Help !!!!!!!

I don't think ISO or AS was ever meant to limit your quality system. After all, it is your system. If you require it for product realization, I would keep it.

you can number your QMS documents however you like.
As long as you can demonstate the requirements are covered you are OK.

There is no SHALL that say your documentation numbering system shall correspond to ISO9001, ISO13485, AS9100, whatever.

Case in point: My current control of records procedure is "SOP 110C".
We're ISO 9001 and 13485 registered.

I wonder if you are getting mixed up between procedures and clauses? There is no requirement (nor is it usually advisable) to write your procedures around the clauses of the standard.

Write the system around your business processes and then cross check with the clauses to make sure you have them all covered. As for numbering them - you decide - you could give them names instead if you wanted to be different. :D

Yes you can. Just because something is not in a standard does not mean you can not have procedures (documented or undocumented) for doing other things. Typically you will have a base numbering/identification method defined in your document control system procedure so typically you follow the system as defined in your own document control procedure.

You don't have to number anything if you don't want to. What you do, and how you do it is your business and the only thing that matters is effective control.
