Document Numbers for Same Document but in Different Languages?

Hello,


We are a manufacturing/service business that now has offices in countries other than the US. Where we have a current form with a document control number, in English, we now need the same form but in another language. Which would be the better choice:
  1. Revise the current document to be multilingual?
  2. Have 1 form in English and a second in a different language, thus having to manage 2 forms instead of just 1?
Or is there another option to best manage this documentation? Our document control process does not get into this level of detail and this issue is the first of many documents that will more than likely need to contain the same information, but in multiple languages.

We are registered to ISO 9001:2008.

I had only one experience dealing with multiple language translations of the same document. I handled it the same way my cell phone operator's manual did:
One document, multiple pages/sections, containing identical data except for the language of the text, photos and drawings were identical in each section. Thus the document had only one number/version.

Thank you Wes for sharing your experience. My thought is that the information is the same and therefore only one document number will work. Just wondering how anyone else managed this.

Wes has explained it pretty well....it's essentially how manufacturers control their operating instruction booklets - like you receive when you buy some type of electrical equipment at a Lowe's or Walmart for instance (English-Spanish-French is usually what I see).

In the past, I've also accepted using separate documents where they would have the same control number and revision status, just the languages are different. I have translated documents from English into a separate Spanish copy, and just identified them as such, and written how we control things into the document control procedure. Usually in these cases it is best for the document controller to control both documents from the same point, and to apply the controls as identically as possible.

I have experience of managing work instructions in two or three language versions; they had the same numbering with suffix PL or UK. The instructions were pertinent to particular national location, so the question of controlling the paper copies was limited to one location. It wasn't particularly messy or difficult.
