I am working for an inspection body which is certified to ISO 9001:2000, now i have other assignment which is to accredit the company to ISO 17020:1998.
Can anyone guide me about the documentation changes as our management wishes that the same manual be used for ISO 17020 purpose. :thanks:

Hi amanbhai,

The first thing I would do is get the standard. ( not clear if you have the requirements or not ) Then you can get a comparison with your present environment.
Btw my information indicates that the latest version is not 1998 but 2004.
Best regards,
Antoine

You could have a look at IAF/ILAC-A4:2004 - Guidance on the Application of ISO/IEC 17020 for more info.

Btw, you had asked about ISO 17020 as early in Jan 07 - ISO 17020 awareness ? . Subsequently, there were plenty of posts by you on the same topic of ISO 17020 in 2007

Is it that you have been working on ISO 17020 for so long ?

Post moved to the 17025 board as the 17025 board also specifically includes 17020.

Re: Document required for ISO 17020?

Some good comments are already here.....

Get the standard if you don't already have it.....

Go to a training course when available (they are rare in North America).....

Get the ILAC-IAF A4 document.....realize it will NOT give all the answers and even seems contradictory at times.....

Put your scope of technical competence together and put it in your manual.....your manual MUST address all the Clauses of 17020, but if any do not apply (e.g., calibration), state that and state why, then move on to the next Clause.....

You can base on your 9K manual, and simply enhance based on the 17020 requirements, but then you must put a cross-reference matrix in the manual to show how the manual meets the 17020 requirements.....

Go to http://www.aplac.org and search signatories to find the accrediting body that you want to deal with.....last time I checked, SCC was not signatory for inspection, but that may have changed.....and talk to ALL the recognized ABs before putting money down for any, unless SCC is recognized.....

For the assessment, remember there will be field observations required so customers in the areas of your technical scope need to be made aware of that.....

Hope this helps.

Re: Document required for ISO 17020?

Yes, I have been working on ISO 17020:1998 since last year. This time I am internal auditing to the systems.
I searched ISO website but got the same version 1998. If it is revised afterwards why ISO is not selling the revised copy ?:thanks:

Re: Document required for ISO 17020?

The changes in the 2004 version were minor so I am given to understand. As to why ISO may not be selling it, not sure.....

I was going through the UKAS Website and it mentioned that the latest version of European standard (BS EN ISO/IEC 17020:2004 General criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection) is identical to the ISO/IEC 17020:1998 - General criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection)

Thus looks like only the European version got changed while ISO remained unchanged.
