DOD, DHS and NASA Are Driving Adoption of Internet of Things Sensors

Sensor development will determine how federal agencies will take advantage of IoT, which could spread more to health IT applications, according to research firm Govini: "...The Govini Internet of Things Taxonomy shows the IoT market is expanding rapidly to meet demand for technologies to collect, store and process a proliferation of agency data.

Highlights show:

  • Federal spending on IoT jumped 20 percent to almost $9 billion in FY15.
  • Sensor spend has nearly tripled from FY11 to FY15, growing 56 percent in the last year alone.
  • Defense mission requirements account for 88 percent of Sensor spend, while NASA and DHS lead Civilian adoption.
