Does a Quality Manual need to be issued a Control Number

I always seem to be asking questions that already have been answered on here but being newish to the site, I don't know how to use it to my benefit yet. How do I do a search, I can never seem to find the box to put my keywords in...

My question about the Quality Manual is, does it need to be issued a control number? The company I am working for has a QM with a revision level, but as with a lot of their docs, there is no number assigned to it??? I thought everything had to have its own number???

Re: Quality Manual and a question

HI QualityDeb

As far as I know, Every 'Quality Related' Document in the QMS must be defined, established and Identifiable.
ie: referenced with a number (eg: QM-1) or the like and each document should have a revision no & date of issue.

Hope this helps.

Re: Quality Manual and a question

Pretty much what I thought, I'm finding myself second guessing myself a lot here because I'm new to this company and semi new to ISO. I'm finding a lot of things not exactly right, but they're ISO certified (???) so I'm guessing they had sqeaked by, lol.
Thanks for the input!!

Wrong, there is no requirment for any kind of number to any kind of document...Do you see "document number" in clause 4.2.3? Not hardly.

All that is actually required for a document is that it be identifiable and current revision status and changes are identified and there is so specified way to accomplish any of those.

Everything, but everything is left up to the user organization to decide upon and the only wrong way is that way that doesn't work for them.

I'm attaching a Word document with two screen shots of the search bar and the advanced search option. Please note - where it says "user name" in the advanced search view, it means the AUTHOR of the item you are seeking. For example, if you want to see what I wrote on a particular topic, you would enter MY name (Wes Bucey) in that box. If you want a universal search of ALL posts, leave the box blank.

Similarly, other boxes give the searcher the option to restrict (filter) the search to certain parameters.

Good hunting!

Tip: the search will not recognize fewer than three characters.

Re: Quality Manual and a question

Randy's right, no control numbers required.

You may want numbers if that helps you identify, categorize, or somehow manage the documents, but they're not required.

I usually recommend them when working with clients, but it is just that, a recommendation.

OK... that makes sense... I'm finding that the ISO Standards are much like the bible... up to interpretation depending on who is reading them.

Get away from the interpretation and just look at the words. I would also highly recommend that you get a copy of ISO 9000:2005 which contains the definition of many of the words people incorrectly interpret. The Oxford Dictionary also comes in handy for all the other words as it is the official reference used for English

Apply the words!

Re: Quality Manual and a question

Try not to "over interpret" and "read in" requirements that aren't there.

Very easy to say, but often very difficult to do. I can't tell you how many times I have added what I "thought was meant" into a requirement only to realize much later (sometimes after turning the organization upside down) that my "thought" was completely misplaced and not actually a requirement at all.

Good luck
