Does anyone know of a calibrated Fillet weld gage?

#1
Hello friends,
We are attempting to gather all required items to be certified by AISC(American Institute of Steel Construction) as a certified steel building fabricator, and I ran across this requirement in the FAQ's, where someone had asked if even the weld fillet gages needed to be certified , here is the quote - "1.2.10.3. Do fillet weld gages used for final inspection require calibration traceability to a national standard?
Yes. Fillet weld gages are one example of equipment used to demonstrate final acceptance of welds. Only the gages used by personnel performing final inspection need to demonstrate traceability to a national standard."

I have not seen these ever to have been certified. Can anyone shed some light on where I could obtain a "certified welding gage"? They are really just a marking on a steel plate, I do not see how they could be adjusted, only corrected for.

Fillet weld gauges are not 'just markings' Here you will find different types of 'Fillet weld gauges'. And here are 'Tips for using weld gauges'.

Hope this helps

Calibration doesn't imply any adjustment...only knowing how far 'off' a master the gauge is. It's like your speedometer and the one in the cop's car. How far is yours off at 50mph, compared to theirs? You can't adjust yours!

A weld fillet gauge is probably best handled by putting it on a shadow graph or similar to verify it's not worn too much, more than actually measuring the angles etc. What ever you use to verify it should be calibrated.

Re: Does anyone know of a calibrated Fillet gage?

Thanks Umang,
What i meant was I didnt see how such a gage could be calibrated. I have seen all the gages you have linked to, and we have a few of them, they dont seem to come with a certificate of calibration. I am assuming we would have to contact a lab to have them calibrated, and at that point, for some types anyway, a correction chart would be utilized? I was interested in skipping that step and purchasing a gage that came with a calibration certificate.

You will have to contact the manufacurers/suppliers of the gauge to find out which comes with a calib cert. Alternatively your option is to have them calibrated from an accreditated lab.

BTW calibration is something you have to look out for, because a gauge coming with calib cert will also need calibration after certain interval.

Agreed, however, I'd be careful to check that the manufacturer/supplier even knows what your asking for, first. I've seen plenty of times that such suppliers will happily charge you for a worthless sheet of paper, dressed up to look like a calibration certificate, simply because they don't know what 'calibration' really implies and, practically, what it means to certify a gauge.

BTW - I still know you can simply have these types of form gauges compared on a projector and save a lot of fuss...

Re: Does anyone know of a calibrated Fillet gage?

I agree Andy, my intention is to start with a calibrated gage if possible, then proceed to calibrate it in house afterwards. What I am trying to aviod is starting off having to calibrate it in house. The way the text mentioned it, made it sound like it was readily available, but no one I've talked to supplieds them that way. We do have labs willing to calibrate it, but thats an added up front expenses for us, and if we need multiple gages, it could get expensive in a hurry. I know there are internal alignment gages, root opening gages, fillet gages, and undercut and crown hieght. Some of these do multiple things, but some dont. For this certification, we are required to have all the gages, whether we perform operations that use them or not , (we would not be using many of them, as we fabricate panels for assembly on site by erectors, who would be required to use them in the assembly process). But we are required to possess them and be able to demonstrate their use.

Since there are labs willing to calibrate, you can skip the in house calibration for the time being, but should not skip the calibration itself on the ground of 'added up front expenses'. If viewed in right perspective, presently you are saving the cost of calibration at the cost of uncertain quality. You are never sure of correctness of your measurement with an un-calibrated gauge.

Secondly, even a calibrated new purchase may also need calibration, if the date of manufacturing and date of purchase/date of first use are wide, because the instruments may go out of calibration due to atmospheric conditions on the shelf.

Therefore I suggest you get all the gauges calibrated from the outside lab and decide the calibration cycle for each according to frequency of usage. Thereafter you may go for in-house calibration.

I have a supplier that I outsource welding gages to. They are 17025 accredited by an ILAC MRA.
Contact me privately if you would like their contact information.

You will have a difficult time locating a manufacturer that can provide an accredited certificate along with a new gage.
