10 hours of safety training per year? for all employees? safety training has what modules to be trained on?

I thought about that too. I don't remember OSHA requiring a specific amount of time for general training. Although, with all the refreshers we do every year it probably comes close to 10 hrs per person if you add in fire drills.

Discordian, do you have some sort of matrix or checklist where you log in and keep the trainings/year? are signatures required of the trainees? about training materials? we are planning to implement a comprehensive program in-house, surely we want it to be robust and capable to pass an OSHA Insp if needed.

From a due diligence stand point, wouldn't you want employees to actually sign the training records? Just in case there is an issue down the road, they can't say "I wasn't trained." If an employee refuses to sign, that should be indicated by the supervisor or trainer and signed off by one of them.

We have a matrix showing all training required by each individual (and the status of the training) and matrices behind the scenes showing what training each has had and # of hours...plus required refresher dates.

we have a cheap training database where we log all training. I could make a better on in MS Access.
We also have everyone sign a training sheet for all quality and safety related topics. These sheets are kept in HR.
Our training materials are a combination of purchased videos and home made powerpoint presentations.
We also have and EHS (environmental safety health) guy who manages all this for about 1/2 his job.
In case you're wondering - we're about 130 person company.

Hi there Quality pros, let me know your wise input to the following:

Does the ISO9k2k require during an external audit that we have safety training for our machine operators? we have small punch press machines and we determine competence by means of the job description, once in the job we continue the training of new machine tenders by means of a hands-on on-the-job training supervised by a group leader, competency is determined when the supervisor determines that the product output meets our customer needs and reqs. thus they are trained to be competent and to understand that we meet our company quality policy goals and objectives by means of our good work and attention to details, we record that in a training matrix, thus we are aware that we must record these training.

The question is what about safety, yes, we also warn our employees about potential safety hazards, etc. will an ISO 9k2k auditor ask to see the safety trainings we have done or not done? We are safety concious but we don't train for safety in an academic form.

Everyone has responded that you should have safety training and I fully agree but...my answer to your original question is "NO" there is no ISO 9001:2000 requirement specifying "you shall conduct safety training".

There is a little thing called OSHA....didn't see anyone mention Right to Know / MSDS / Hazard Communication training....but maybe I missed it .

Though ISO 9001:2000 does not specifically ask for the safety training etc., the following points may be considered while developing and implementing a Quality Management System based on the standard:

ISO 9001:2000 , 6.4 states about Work Environment and to my perception, safety becomes one of the issues in determining and managing the work environment. .

Also, according to ISO 9000,

Quality is 'degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfuls requirements' (3.1.1)

Requirement is 'need or expectation that is stated, generally implied or obligatory (3.1.2)
Note 1 includes '...generally implied means that it is custom or common practice for.....and other interested parties...'

Where we include people of the organisation in other interestd parties (3.3.7), one of their requirement would be safe working conditions or information regarding personal safety.

How the organisation determines and manages this in its Quality Management System needs to be addressed by the organisation. (wether by training, signboards, work instructions etc etc)

To my mind we are not implementing a QMS to satisfy ISO 9001:2000 requirements, but we are using ISO 9001:2000, or rather ISO 9000 series to implement an effective Quality Management System in an organisation.

For the 109th time: ISO 9001 does NOT address work environment safety. Read the standard. It talks about managing the work environment as it might affect product quality.
Safety, for the most part, takes priority over quality and needs to be adequately managed. But occupational safety is outside the scope of ISO 9001.
