Dumbell Cutter Calibration

We have a dumbell sample cutterfor rubber tensile tests, and traditionally it has been in the calibration system, nobody know why. Does anyone know about a formal requirement for it, or would be ok to perform just an annual visual check for sharpness and general condition of the device. Thanks.

Welcome to the Cove!!

We, too have such a device. I believe that the reason for the calibration is to maintain the same width of the cut. If the tool wears and the width of the dumbbell gets larger, the tensile would increase, thereby eliminating the ability to accurately compare your tensile results with earlier (last year's/ 10 years ago) results, as well as results from other labs.

Hope this helps.

It seems like you could do away with calibration of the cutter since it's not actually a measuring device. It may be more appropriate to periodically measure the dumbells with a calibrated instrument to monitor their size.

Murena - welcome to the Cove. We have a similar cutter and as Craig points out the important part is the width of the sample. It would be almost impossible to keep the cutter in the calibration system but you can make a holder for your dumbells that acts as a go/no go gage for them. When we cut the samples, we set them in the holder for confirmation of cut. If we see a problem, we send the cutter to the tool room for repair.
