Duplicated Gauges want to reduce calibration

After our latest Calibration run I have looked at the number of gauges we currently have to look at the cost of calibration, during this exercise I have noticed that we have sometimes 4 of the same size gauge i.e. m4 screw plug gauge.

What I was thinking of doing is actually only calibrating one of these gauges that will be kept for inspection use only and label the rest reference only. As long as the inspection is kept locked and is used for verification of the 1st off and in patrol inspections I believe I can almost cut the cost of calibration by 3/4's

Does anyone else run something similar?

I would be slightly careful with this, look at the cost saving of the calibrations vs the cost of the lost product if one of the reference gauges was to fail. Sometimes the cost of calibration can be a lot smaller than even a single failure.

Also depending on what quality system you run if any (9001 etc.) there may be a requirement for equipment used for product verification to be calibrated.

I personally would be surprised to find a gauge labelled as "reference only" for anything but minor un-recorded in-process checks that are not critical to product fit, form or function.

Another way to approach this would be, do you actually need all four of the gauges or are you over inspecting the material? Is the validation behind the process acceptable to conduct a lower frequency of verification allowing for the reduction in the number of gauges available?

One of the first things I did when I took over calibration was create the following 'rules':

1. Thread gages (ID and OD) remain in wax seal until used. Thread gages are all stored in the quality department and individually checked out to jobs.

2. If after 1 year, the gage is still sealed in wax, I extended the calibration by 1 year (I wrote this into our procedures). Note, if any part of the wax seal is broken/removed for any reason, this requires re-calibration. I also reviewed the usage history.

3. If after the 2nd year, the gage is still sealed in wax, I pull from service and place in Bond. Always maintaining the wax seal for both preventative damage and to indicate the device has not been used. I also reviewed the usage history.

This has worked well and we removed over 1/2 of our gages. This also allows us to use the gage years after being put into bond (yes, using a gage 5 years old was fairly recent) so long as we re-calibrate.

This is an on-going process so if we have gages that were used 5 years ago but are no longer used, we can catch it after a year. Yes, we do have to pay for the last calibration (that puts it in wax) but for AS9100/ISO9001 this is a requirement.
