ECO Disposition - Deviation Needed for Use As Is?

#1
Hi All,

My company is working towards AS9100 certification and we have recently updated our change control and deviation processes. A question has come regarding engineering changes and superseded material that engineering has recommended be used as is.

Because the superseded material is no longer part of the approved configuration, is it then necessary to have an approved deviation prior to using it?

Thanks!

If your organization is design responsible, you can modify your change form (either paper or electronic) to include the option to use as is without the paperwork of creating a separate deviation. All you need is a check box, likely also with a special instruction text field. Your procedure can then say if checked, the old parts may be used, adding any restrictions you think are required (which may be none.). This may only require a couple of sentences in your procedure.

Thanks for the comment. I understand what you're saying to provide engineering with space to add any additional constraints regarding a use as is disposition. It makes sense.

A follow up question:
Clause 8.5.2 reads: "The organization shall maintain the identification of the configuration of the products and services in order to identify any differences between the actual configuration and the required configuration."

What steps, if any, might an organization take to meet this requirement when using superseded material?

Reference the deviation number on the manufacturing record. Make sure the deviation record is complete.

If it permanent, it goes typically goes into the design loop for an ECO.

Again, as Sidney is pointing out, only if you are the design authority for the part in question.
