I currently have employees using foot straps and or wrist straps to control esd in our day to day activities. I have a potential customer who wants to have me mandate that my employees not only wear straps on both feet but also use a wrist strap at the same time. I cannot find anything in what I've read that said this is necessary. I'm pretty new to esd having come from a more machine shop environment to a electrical equipment mfg. that I am at now, just looking for some input from the pros out there.

Also, during some research I see ESD clothing is available. Can these garments be worn in lieu of either being tethered by a wrist strap or wearing foot straps?

Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks!!!

If staff will be handling ESD sensitive devices away from a controlled workstation, they should wear foot straps on both feet - in this manner, there is a greatly reduced chance of static buildup while walking. Of course, the floor needs to be grounded (or treated to dissipate charge) for foot gear to have any effect.

Keep in mind that the ESD smocks protect the electronics from your clothing - use of a wrist strap at the workstation is still required.

Have you had a chance to read through the ANSI/ESD S20.20 documentation?

I know that in some specific production environments (for instance, semiconductor or assembly/test of electronic) there is the usage of wrist bracelets as well as well foot straps.
In order to establish the requirements for the production environmental control, you could implement a risk analysis for that purpose. You could also prove that your behaviour is OK collecting data and analyzing them, putting in evidence that there is no jeopardy for you product.

Re: ESD Protection? Need input.

First time poster requesting some information related to this topic. My company currently uses ESD Smocks to cover worker's synthetic insulative clothing. The smocks we purchase from our supplier are guaranteed to meet ESD requirements of >1 X10^11 ohms sleeve to sleeve at the time of purchase, but as time goes on and we wash the smocks, they lose their effectiveness and become Out of Spec as a Static Control Garment. My question is whether anyone has experience dealing with this? Would i have to repurchase the ESD smocks to replace the ones out of spec or are there any other solutions to this?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good day wchang001,

ESD Systems.com addresses laundering practices to maintain the grounding capabilities of ESD protective garments, but I have not found any source to support restoration of the garments' functional performance once decay has set in.

I am not affiliated with ESD Systems.com.

Yes, you shall replace them or use them in another work enviroment where contamination is not an issue.
There are specification for laundry service. I have seen that 80 washing should be the maximum limit for washing for garments in ISO 3 environment. After thet there are some stracth on the garments as seen at microscope for the fibers, so the smock is no longer effective in its intent.
You shall scrap them and purchase new ones.:bigwave:
