We conducted our satisfaction survey with 83 questions divided in 9 sections. Please find attached the questions.

If a supplier ever sent me a questionnaire with 83 questions, it would hit the round file immediately and I would seriously reconsider whether to retain such a supplier who would think to waste my time with such a lengthy questionnaire.

If the suppler is that unsure of his business that he has 83 questions to ask a customer about his "satisfaction," he probably isn't paying attention to his internal statistics (on time delivery, returns, complaints, reorders, etc.)

The survey in question deals with employee satisfaction, not customer satisfaction, although I think your point wrt its ponderous length might still stand.

Part of that might be I haven't been anyone's employee for 40+ years - always been an equity holder in the business, despite having a "job title." As an employer, I would not consider 83 questions a "routine" questionnaire for all or any small group of employees, but might consider an in-depth questionnaire, followed by a long personal interview for someone (an individual) being considered for a board-level position or C-level office suite.

Ashish, hello. By the construction and design of the survey, it appears that someone who put it together knew what they were doing. Do you know if they calculated and reliability numbers for the survey? What about validity? If you don't know that, it's fine. If you do, it would be great.

Ashish, one comment of help on the survey, if I may. After each construct, switch the positioning of the Likert scale. So for #2, have strongly agree on the right side, instead of the left. Do that after every other one. That way, the person does not go straight down the page clicking the same left-most box. They actually slow down and think about their answers.

Yes the survey is long. But there are seven constructs being measured, and there looks like there is a representative number of questions under each. That is one of many perils with using surveys. To get a decent response, you have to ask about the same thing (working environment, for example) several different ways.

When doing my SBIR research project I referenced a book - considered the industry default reference on survey design and execution - that advised the survey be short enough to complete in 10-15 minutes to maximize the return rate. 83 questions could be boiled down to a few well-phrased interview questions to get a useful sense of the employee's state of mind and why.
Spot on, Jennifer.:agree1: Which is why surveys should only be used when absolutely necessary; when the needed information cannot be gained from any other source. You can sit down and use the construct measures to ask things in an semi-open interview, and gain some useful information.

To your 10-15 minutes, you can measure 3-5 items of interest, with 7-10 questions each. You can finish the questions in like four minutes, and leave some time where maybe they would write in some additional comments, complaints, etc.
