A backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer heading east on Interstate 70 in western Kansas. The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concert, reinforced with 1.5 inch rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a crisscross patter and layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.

QUESTION : When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast does one have to be travelling to slice the bridge in half?

ASSUMPTION : There is no effect caused by headwind and no braking is done by the driver.

EXTRA CREDIT : Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above.

See answer below (and attached pictures).

ANSWER : Who cares? The trucking company just bought themselves a bridge. :notme:

I have to ask, was the arm up the whole time? Couldn't have been, way too many things he would have hit already.

I live near a railroad overpass that's been hit 3 times since I moved there (6yrs) by trucks that are too tall. Two lane one way w/ parking on both sides, so not a tiny street but still only 25mph speed limit.

Their last "fix" was a cable with a sign inthe middle that says Danger Low Clearance...

Its been years since I was there, but several years ago if you skiied Loveland in Colorado you would sometimes hear a very loud airhorn go off. I was told it was installed to warn vehicles with high loads before they went into the tunnel. Part of the ski resort was on top of the tunnel, too, waay up the mountain.

Near where I used to live in Chicago (on Kimball between Belmont and Addison, for those who are familiar) There was a railroad spur overpass where the clearance was only about 10 feet or so, and there were big warning signs in both directions, on the street and on the overpass itself. At least once every few months for several years I would see a truck jammed underneath it. Depending on how fast the truck was moving, it would sometimes peel off the top of the trailer or box like opening a sardine can.

Through the miracle of Google Maps I just had a look at the overpass, and in the attached picture you can see the overpass in question and a semi that appears to have just successfully cleared it, so I guess they finally did something about it.
