Environmental Conditions - Where gage calibrated vs. Where gage used

Hi,
Tools are calibrated under controlled ambient temperature and humidity conditions, but they will be used in a different environment. Will this change in temperature affect the accuracy of the tool?

I would really appreciate an answer to this as well as some reading material.

Welcome to the Cove:bigwave:

It depends on what sort of tools you're referring to, and the range of temperatures.

If you consider a calibration lab that calibrates analytical, dimensional and electrical tools, then what best can be done to assure that the accuracy is maintained

It also depends on the criteria your inspecting/testing to. If your tolerances are not very tight, or your citeria is very loose it may not make a difference the conditions you use them in within reason.

A quick reference would be to take a gage block or other cal standard used and the equipment you're inspecting with to the testing area and let them equalize to the testing area temp and compare the readings you get there with the readings from the cal lab/room. This should give you a very quick indication of the situation.

Is it a goog practice to keep the calibrated tool in the environment it is going to be used, before using the tool to perform the work?

Typically in most cases calibrated tools are kept in a tool room or calibration locker which is again typically located on the shop floors or in the shop areas with similar temperatures. If not, it may be wise to let the tools acclimatize to the temperature of the related equipment you're working on.

Again, if the tolerances you're working too are not very tight you may be able to get away with a little temperature differences.

Thanx for the information. I have another question regarding the same,

Let us assume the calibration work is being sent out to a lab. Is it advisable to ask the lab to perform the calibration work at temp that is maintained at the shop floor? I thought even if allow the tool to get accusotomed to rhe working temp there still would be some error in measurement.

I am sure if it is going to traceable to a national standard the lab temp is part of the national standarization process.

It would be up to you to control the environment of where you are taking acceptance measurements.

You should evaluate the size, thermal coefficient of expansion of the material to be measured and temperature difference from the calibration environment. If this is not significant compared to the specifications, you are good to go. If it is significant, you should consider thermally compensated gages or soaking the part and gage in the controlled environment before measuring. The gages are usually more cost-effective than the soak option.
