Environmental Policy Publicly Available - ISO 14001 Clause 4.2f

Reviewing a 14001 gap analysis worksheet here, and it states " Has top management defined the organizations environmental policy to ensure that it is available to the public?"
I assume they mean the public at large, and not just a large employee base, because thats covered in 4.2e.
How does a company do this? On the website? Publish it in public notice section of the newspaper?

We've always just posted ours in the lobby of our facility. Anyone is free to walk in off the street and read it. A website is a good option too, if you have one.

Do it any way you want as long as the "general public" can see it.

Post it in the lobby, put it on your website or nail it to a tree out front, whatever, just make a decision and follow through with it. All that matters is that I can get a it and my neighbor can get it, you come up with the method.

In fact, the concept of policy being available to the public is open to many interpretations but infact it's only the stakeholders who are interested in our environmental policy (rather than the general public) since I'm not interested what someone else's policy in London reads like although I would be interested in my neighbour's environmental policy coz it affects me.

Not only walk ins, but we actually get more "phone ins" wanting to know what our environmental policy is. We will recite it over the phone, e-mail, or fax a copy.

I suppose someone could argue that nailing it to a tree would be a significant environmental impact But anyway, posting it in the lobby is a good option, as well as on the company's website, having it available at trade show booths, and if the company is publicly held should be in the company's annual report to shareholders.
