ERP Software Implementation

We are implementing a new ERP from an ancient software. During installation the developers want to assign item numbers to all component parts. How has this been handled in other companies without changing every drawing, instruction, inspection documents, etc. We have more than 3,000 unique numbers.

Please help if possible.

Ideally, assign an item number to each part number. I'm not sure I understand the problem. Your part numbers are unique, aren't they? Why would you have to change drawings, instructions, inspection documents, etc.?

The developers ought to be able to import your part number scheme, unless your part numbers use some characters that the new software can't handle for some reason or your part numbers are too long, etc. Worst case, most modern software should have a way to add an alias for each part, so your part number could be the alias.

Something doesn't sound right. Why aren't they just importing your part file?

Sounds like SAP... The ERP item number can just that- the ERP identifier, but maybe there is another field you can use to include your current P/N structure, as a part name or description.
