ESD and Bio-Hazards in a Medical Equipment Repair/Maintenance Facility

I work for a medical equipment repair/maintenance facility and a question came up. We work on equipment that may be a bio-hazard and need to use universal procautions such as wearing gloves. the items can also be static sensitive requiring ESD protective measures such as static mats and wrist straps. Gloves are an insulator that can hold a static charge. The question is, will wearing a wrist strap remove the charge from the gloves or are special ESD gloves needed.
