ETSO, TSO and EASA Form 1 - Do I need the ETSO approval for the installation?

Hello everybody,

I need to install a Fuel Level Indicator with TSO approval. This equipment is compliance with ETSO but not approved by EASA. As I am in the EU do I need the ETSO approval for the installation?

Part 21 states that, for each part to be installed, a Statement of Conformity (EASA Form 1) is requested by the Agency. In the ETSO approval is it included the statement of Conformity?

If I buy a Fuel Level Indicator, TSO approved, by a US company which documentation it is required for the installation in the EU? It would be sufficient for EASA the TSO approval?

Buno giorno Sara,

yes, the article requires an ETSO approval if it is to be installed in an aircraft in any of the EASA member states (EU + Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway).

The EASA form 1 or equivalent (FAA Form 8130-3 ...) certifies the conformity with the approved design data AFTER PRODUCTION. It does not certify any conformity with a TSO or ETSO or any other standard.

Hi everybody,

I read the posts and if I understand it properly then an ETSO is only needed when you are putting a new component/product onto the aircraft (also a change of material?) and the STC is there for finding out what the influences will be of this modification.

So when a company just wants to do minor changes (material change) on a CS-23 type aircraft then there is no need for an ETSO, then only an STC will have to be applied for? The company is no DOA nor ADOA.

You dont need to be an DOA right for minor changes? 1 question about ADOA, is that a certification given to a company? or the name of the procedure of STC and ETSO?
