Re: Expaining ISO 9001 to our Hourly Associates

Losing a job because of doing ISO? I certainly hope not, Wes. Taking people out of work they shouldn't be doing, to make them more productive - that's "doing ISO". I'll state it again. No-one should lose their job because of doing ISO 9001.
It's not ISO that loses jobs - it is the perception many wrong-headed managers have that they are "re-engineering" their organizations by making them more efficient - "more efficient" translating to "get more production from each worker so we can use fewer workers," instead of, (the gold standard) "get more production from each worker so we can produce more, sell more, and earn more!"

It's sad to contemplate the number of managers that omit "E X P A N D" from their thinking and planning. Too many drones looking to keep their status quo silos.

Wes,

Yes, it would be foolish to increase the capacity of production with greater efficiency but to ignore the need to increase the throughput with better products, marketing and selling.

Failure of the system to make full use of the increased capacity is however common because improvement projects are often scope limited to the production part of the core process that converts customer needs into cash in the bank.

Enabling managers to understand their organization as a system as they develop their management system can prevent such foolishness so they do keep their promise not to lay off any employees.

what you just wrote is a capsulization of Deming's System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK.) It's too bad more folks throughout an organization are not exposed to and given the chance to be part of SoPK.

I am finding that a lot of our associates have no idea what ISO 9001 is and the ones that do have the wrong impression of ISO 9001 . I wanted to do a basic training explaining what ISO 9001 is, the benefits of ISO 9001, and what they can expect during the implementation process.
I can only repeat what others have already mentioned: de-emphasize any reference to ISO and ISO 9001 to the worker-bees. It is a GRAVE mistake to try to educate the general workforce on ISO 9001. You must, instead, focus on the fact that the organization has processes in place to ensure that the product conforms to requirements and the organization values and seeks customer satisfaction. Adherence and improvement of the processes is key.

Read my lips: :notme: you will regret focusing any indoctrination on ISO 9001. It is the sure fire way to alienate the employees from your quality system. Don't "ISOlate" your co-workers.

Good luck.

Amy,

It is better for the leaders to explain the management system, its obligations and its benefits.

Run a workshop for the best communicators as awareness leaders so they can agree their message and how best to engage the employees in developing, using and improving their management system.

Much better than teaching ISO 9001 to everyone.
