Hello,

I would be happy if any of you could help me with an explanation regarding the following requirement of AS/EN 9100:

7.4.1 Purchasing process
d) The organization shall ensure where required that both the organization and all suppliers use customer-approved special process sources.

Does that mean that every special process source requires to be approved by the customer or

are the organization and all suppliers required to use customer-approved special process sources only in cases where this is an explicitive requirement of the customer?

Thank you very much for your help!

Regards,
Angelika

Re: AS/EN 9100: 7.4.1 Special process sources

Only when explicitly required by the customer, however don't miss that this requirement must be flowed down to any supplier you sublet it to as well.

Thank you very much, Big Jim.

Sometimes I have difficulty in interpreting the wordings used in the standards.

Does "where required" clearly say that or did you learn this from other sources?

The German translation of the standard is even more difficult to understand so I cannot refer to that either.

Thanks again for your help!

Kind regards,
Angelika

The "where required" is the qualifier. If it is not required you don't have to do it.

Hi Angelika,
Some time back, before the onset of AS9100 as the default approval for aerospace suppliers, customers used to specify the special process suppliers you were allowed to use. Some programs still use this, such as JSF. Only OEM / Customer approved Special Processors can be used. In the past, these subcontractors held Boeing, Lockheed, MD etc.. approvals for their special processes and suppliers, such as machinists, had to go to these annointed subcontractors, to get the finishing processes done. Now days, special processors have NADCAP and AS9100 approval so are normally acceptable for all to use. However, there are still some customers that require their approval of the subbies just to make sure you are using the ones they have checked out and are on the customer AVL.

Where the customer requires it, you must only go to 'their' approved special process suppliers. This will normally be stipulated on the contract or purchasing documentation.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, :bigwave:
