External Calibration Certificate Review

Hello -

I would like to have a simple cover sheet that lists items required on certs from our calibration provider's. What do we need on our external certs in order to be ISO 9000 / 9001 compliant? Please let me know if this is overkill. My goal is to make this simple. and consistent. - thank you

This is what I had in mind.

  • Supplier Name
  • Calibration Tech. Identified
  • Equipment Used to calibrate identified
  • Calibration Dates of Equipment Used present /correct
  • As found is in spec?
    • Yes = no action
    • No = obtain supervisor approval
  • NIST statement present.
  • Serial # of equip. being calibrated present / correct
  • Reviewer Initials and date.

  1. Is NIST statement necessary?
  2. Does NIST statement eliminate the need to provide Calibration Equipment's Calibration dates or any of the other items listed?

ISO/IEC 17025 gives some excellent details of the content of a calibration report. You might want to check into that as a guide.

I was soooo excited to see a reply. - Thank you. I searched for the document to find that I would have to buy it - UGH. I'm at home and thought I could get ahead before Monday.

Any free input is appreciated b/c I might not be permitted to buy the document once I get to work. :(

Equipment Used to calibrate identified
With its calibration status traceable to the national standards.
and
Claimed accuracy Vs found accuracy of the DUC
and
The measurement uncertainity calculated
and
If the calibration provider is ISO/IEC 17025 certified., then the accreditaton mark on the certificate.
and
The Valid upto date of the certificate.

MEDQA, a few things you need to make sure it is traceable.

It needs to have the documented path of traceability. That is, what is the specific link to the next level up? BTW, the so-called NIST Numbers are NOT considered valid for traceability, unless you can link them to a specific calibration of YOUR CALIBRATION PROVIDERS' standards at a specific point, and that must agree with the stated recall documented on the cal cert listing the standards, as provided to you. If it is of THEIR calibration providers' standards, then you have a broken link.

Next is uncertainty. You may not need the uncertainty, that is a different question. But the uncertainty of the delivered calibration needs to be stated.

This is consistent with what Metrologists know as VIM, which is the dictionary for calibration.

Ideally the lab is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and also provides the logo and certificate number.

The rest of the list you put forward is acceptable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks to all.

I don't expect that any of our providers aren't doing what they say they are doing. I just want internal techs to read the certs and verify their content is accurate. I don't want to ask for more than we need. If any items from my list should be "If Present" please advise.

I would like you to refer the Agilent's Calibration Certificate Explained and an attachment from NIST (refer page 2)
