FAI (First Article Inspection) on source-controlled parts

An AS9102 FAI requirement was flowed down from my customer for an assembly we are building for them. We will be generating an FAI for the assembly. However, the assembly is made up of two parts, both of which are source-controlled by my customer. The source control drawings call out a standard military part that is available from distributors. The source control drawings do not specify any modifications to these parts. They simply lift the part information from the mil spec. How do I attack the FAI for these?

I do not have access to the manufacturing information for these parts as they technically are catalog items. Do I just fill out Form 1 with the drawing part number then list the mil / catalog part number in the Parts List section?

If you have run across this before, how did you address this?

No don’t pass the buck to your supplier on SCD. SCD’s are intended for procurement of a supplier’s proprietary design and as such you only need to do AS9102 to the SCD and not the manufacturers design documentation.

Contrary to most assumptions any one in the supply chain can create the AS9102. Your customer asked for the 9102 from you. Your option is to create the 9102 or flow it down to your supplier but that is not required.

First - During contract review - contact the customer and clarify what is required.

Second - contact the supplier to see if they have a completed FAIR - if not - make a statement where you acquired the product (Supplier or COTS)

COTS (Commercial of the shelf) do not require FAIR because they are available for everyone.

Just make a note on the FAIR and keep the customer informed.

Snip...I do not have access to the manufacturing information for these parts as they technically are catalog items. Do I just fill out Form 1 with the drawing part number then list the mil / catalog part number in the Parts List section?

You will still need to identify it on Form 1 as part of the FAI, and it wouldn't hurt identifying on Form 3.

Just my opinion
