FAI (First Article Inspection) Report Number Method

A simple question (hopefully):

What method do you use for numbering your FAI reports? I'm referring to the tracking number in the upper right-hand corner of the AS9102-suggested FAI forms. I started using my internal job number for the part and add a '-1', '-2', etc. as I added more forms. This got confusing when the main part used other components already FAI'ed on another job. Would just keeping a running list of consecutive numbers work better?

How do you personally do this and how well does it work?

:thanks:

Re: FAI report number method

I use the part number followed by the date I created the report. This gives me fairly good information when looking it up and will (almost) guaranty it is a unique number.

When i came to this company i asked and their was/is no standard. I use the P/N-Rev.

But some of ours go into a customer electronic system that creates a number for us. This is one of those topics no one seems to be able to agree upon. Ultimately go with what works for you and your company and then be consistant with it.

Agreed. There is no specific requirement as to what numbering system to use. The purpose of my question was to find out how others are handling this and to possibly implement that method into my system. What I'm doing, or not doing, now definitely is not working well here.

I use the job number (i.e. shop traveler number, work order number), as well. The reason I use this number is for traceability to the order from which the part was produced.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by added more forms?

This got confusing when the main part used other components already FAI'ed on another job.
For components already FAI'ed, all you have to do is enter the information pertaining to those specific components into Fields 15 thru 18 on Form 1.

To answer the second question first:
Probably a poor choice of words on my part. I should have said, as "I process more parts and assemblies...". One of our main assemblies might be made up of 12 to 20 subassemblies and/or parts that are also run through the FAI process.

To answer the other two questions:
I tried using the job number once and I might go back to that. It just got messy when I had parts that FAI was already performed on and were processed on another job number. While gathering up all the reports to submit to my customer, I was concerned that a report might be left out if the numbers weren't sequential. (Just my own personal paranoia.) I do include the job number in Field 9 so I have traceability covered there.

Nobody is right or wrong on this one. Just pickin' some brains for my continous improvement opportunity here.

I am assuming this might be a assembly and a component requirement.

I use a job (traveler) number for the assembly and a specific operation number added to the job number with a dash for a component of the same assembly. It worked for our customer, never had any problem
