That's cool.

Our friend here has indicated that helicoils may not work because of a lack of surrounding material. In one of my previous posts I had been at a loss for words when I suggested steel inserts (I was looking for helicoil, thank you).

In the application in question the torque loads will not be gradual and continuous, they will be rapid, hard and recurring because of driving and track conditions, and as such we would see broken mounting points with intact helicoils and bolts in them. Our friends problem is in the actual mounting point itself with a solution being some machine work to allow steel to steel mounting.

I agree, it appears that the design of the flange needs to be evaluated for the best method of strengthening. Not knowing the full design details, speculating on a fix is beyond me.

Hi everyone.
I have just joined this forum and wondered if anyone can advise me please.
I have a woodlathe with 3/4 x 16 unf threaded spindle and want to buy a tap so that I can make custom chucks etc from wood.
I came across some taps that have the thread 3/4 x 16 unjf. I have read your posts with interest but not being an engineering person I wondered if I bought the taps, tapped the holes in hardwood ( beech or similar ) would the threads be compatible and allow me to mount the homemade chucks onto my spindles? to be honest the root thread diameter explaination goes well above my head :)
Any advice you can give me will be very much appreciated.
best regards.
Graham

Graham;

The short answer: Most likely, yes.

The longer, 4-part answer:
1.
UNF and UNJF use the same taps. The only difference between the taps is the 'J' on the shank.
2.
The minor diameter is different between UNF and UNJF, but you control that with your tap drill size.
3.
The material being machined does not affect the size of the thread. It is the same size in wood as it is in steel.
4.
Taps do have size variations identified as an Hx. The x = the increase in size over the basic pitch diameter. Each increasing x value = 0.0005". For your application an H3 or H5 is optimum. The UNJF tap is most likely an H3.

I hope this information helps.:)

Hi Wayne and Stijloor.
Thank you both very much for the information, I will buy one of the taps and start making the chucks.
best regards.
Graham
