Re: AS9100 Rev. D - When and what?

Here is a little guidance to address your question:

Prevention of Counterfeit Product: this has been a requirement for a number of years via contract requirement. Look to AS6174, Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel as a good reference document. AS5553, Fraudulent Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition is another document assocated with EEE parts.

Product Safety: AS9100D definition 3.4 indicates that product safety is related to design or intended purpose so if you are a build to customer design this becomes less of an issue but you still needed to address within the QMS. Associated clause for product safety in 9100 are 7.3, 8.1, 8.1.3 and 8.4.3.

Human Factors: ISO 9000:2015, Definition 3.10.3 is the starting point in understanding but a expanded definition comes from AS9110:2009, Quality Management System - Requirements for Aviation Maintenance Organizations Definition 3.5 which defines it as the study of how humans behave.

Re: AS9100 Rev. D - When and what?

AS9100D has been released on 20-September-2016. You can get it for US$74 from the SAE website.
I would like to know if anyone can share a procedure or process for:

Counterfeit items, Product safety and human factors applicable to a CNC machine shop. Also is a risk register a sufficient tool to manage risks as per this standard?

Re: AS9100 Rev. D - When and what?

FYI the IAQG AS9100 Rev D deployment support materials located here have been updated. There is a new Executive Level Summary Presentation, and the Key Changes Presentation and Clause-by-Clause Presentation have both been updated.

The primary difference I noticed in the Key Changes presentation was the addition of a section on many of the slides describing the benefits of the new requirements.

The Clause-by-Clause presentation added four slides in an introduction section and an implementation benefits slide toward the end.

Re: AS9100 Rev. D - When and what?

A fellow quality professional pointed out that there is a stealth requirement related to the organizations Strategic Direction. Strategic Direction is mentioned five times within the International Standards:

0.3.1 (Process Approach) General: The Quality Management System process should satisfy the Strategic Direction of the Organization

4.1 Understanding the Organization and Its Context: The organization shall determine… issues relevant to… its strategic direction…

5.1.1.b (Leadership and Commitment) General: Top management shall… ensure that the quality policy and objectives… are compatible (aligned) with the… strategic direction of the organization.

5.2.1.a Establishing the Quality Policy: Top management shall establish, implement, and maintain a quality policy that is appropriate… and supports (the organizations)… strategic direction.

9.3.1 (Management Review) General: During management review the entire QMS must be assessed against the strategic direction.

Nowhere is ISO 9001 or AS9100 is there a requirement for the Strategic Direction to exist nor does the International Standard(s) (including ISO 9000) defines the meaning of strategic direction. The Business Dictionary defines strategic direction as:

“A course of action that leads to the achievement of the goals of an organization’s strategy”

Interesting how our members of ISO and IAQG have added a requirement that is not defined but we must meet it.
