I have to say that I am astounded with the fact that 13 people (so far) out of 22 went on the record, in a PUBLIC poll answering yes to the question
Incredibly, no book, management theory or international standard has ever been developed along these lines. Juran, Deming, Peter Drucker and many others totally missed it.
Imagine how many trillions of dollars that have been wasted in the last 6 decades by customers assessing supplier's capabilities and wasting time by delving into their manufacturing, engineering, inspection processes. All they needed to see was right there: the bathroom. Chief Janitorial Officer positions would be created.
You guys should write to ANSI and change the whole criteria of the MBNQA Program. But wait, you are right. When people realize the "bathroom" conditions in China, we will stop exporting our Industrial Park over there.
Amazing....:bonk:

I'll bet the Enron and Worldcom bathrooms were the picture of cleanliness and organization, with the newest and finest fixtures available.

Despite the poll, we haven't established criteria - we require documented evidence, not anecdotal, which ties cause to effect, or even to show by statistical means that one condition is symptomatic of another. (e.g. If birth rates are lower during an economic depression, what is the causal relationship? or are they independent and merely coincidental?)

If we can establish such causal relationship, I'm ready to start "sniffing out" new auditing techniques.

I can sense where checking bathroom facilities might "have the odor of" 6.3 Infrastucture.

Only in regards to conformity of product requirements. I think more like 6.4 Work environment. What do you think,
— facilities for people in the organization
refers to?

I don't know that I'd base my entire impression of a business on the state of its rest rooms - some types of industry, metals production for example, are by their nature dirty and make keeping rest rooms clean difficult. I'm also suspicious regarding the states of plants when I'm visiting as an important outside guest. I know we do additional cleaning ahead of important visits even though we do a pretty decent job of housekeeping normally. I'm sure other companies are much the same.

For those job-hunting, general rest room condition might be an indicator of whether you'd want to work there long term or not or at least a factor to consider.

One thing that I do when auditing a supplier is drive around the building. If I see large amounts of scrap or raw materials exposed to the elements than I can get a feel for how effective their quality system is. Typically tours of the plant do not include those area's. One company I audited the back of the building looked like Sanford and Son's. When the tour was completed and they began to usher me to a conference room I mentioned what I had seen. The Quality Manager had no clue that defective material was stored outdoors. When we investigated the Quality manger was shoked since he and the Production Manager could only identify half of the material stored outside.

I agree. :agree1: If possible, I also drive around the outskirts of the building before performing the actual assessment. You can learn a lot about a company (and their Quality System) from their housekeeping.
The same applies to our own work environment.
