First Australian Woman PM

Yippee - a couple of days ago, folks, we got our first female PM ever, Julia Gillard. (The PM, for those of you ignorant of our politics is the leader of the party in power for the country).

And an unmarried, childfree woman at that! Wonders will never cease. Not only that, but our Governor-General, before whom Julia took the oath, is also a female. So there I was newly back from Europe, watching a female GG and a brand new female PM on the evening news. Quite brought a tear to the eye of this feminist, though it's been a very long time coming.

Good for Australia and the world.

BTW, She's less than two months younger than Obama and less than two months older than me. :D

We too have pride in having a female President, the first lady of India. She is the first ever female to hold this position.

Earlier, Mrs. Indira Gandhi had successfully held the post of prime Minister for over 15 years.

Sirimavo Bandarnaike was the first woman Prime Minister in the World. She was first in power from from 21 Jul 1960 to 27 Mar 1965. Our great PM, Indira Gandhi was the second from 19 Jan 1966 to 24 Mar 1977.

Very good source of information that reminds me of 47 of the female personalities who have so far held the highest political positions in their respective states.
I just add that Mrs. Gandhi, (after 1977) again rocked to power from 14 Jan 1980 to 31 Oct 1984, i.e.; till her assassination.

This is a good thing, and what makes it even better (imo, of course) is that Ms. Gillard didn't take an oath, per se, but executed an affirmation, because she describes herself as "not religious."

Oh yes, I didn't at all mean to suggest that Australia was a world leader in this, far from it! India led the way for the rest of the world - interesting, really, because it doesn't seem to be a country where womens' rights are uniformly upheld nor world leading. But oh yes, you certainly beat everyone on this.

Australia has been wayyy behind. (And the USA remains behind in this.)

I do not think so, Indian women enjoy equal rights - now, Sonia Gandhi is the President of the largest party, the indian National Congress Party that is in power currently.

Yes, may not be world leading example but indian women have enjoyed equal rights. In my home, my wife is the Prime Minister ;)

Its all downhill for Australia now.
More single mums on pensions
More union activists.
She wasnt even voted in by the polpulace, current PM was rousted by the feel gooders who like the feminist vote.
Oh well Julia enjoy it whilst you can until the power brokers move you out for the next good idea that gets short term votes!
